Developmental Editing
What Is Developmental Editing?

Taken from the Editorial Freelancer’s Association page: “Developmental editors deal with content, organization, and genre considerations. In a typical developmental edit, the developmental editor provides a revision letter, also called an “editorial letter”…that outlines the big-picture issues to be addressed in revision….They not only provide editorial feedback but also make changes by rewriting and reorganizing passages. Their work is similar to that of ghostwriters, but unlike ghostwriters, they edit existing text rather than create it from scratch.”

Do You Need It?

You may need a developmental edit if you’ve just finished your second draft. You believe you’ve worked out the kinks of a rough first draft but still feel lost. Maybe there are plot holes you can’t seem to figure out, or your characters lack an arc that will make them unforgettable. You need help with the overarching premise and structure and a detailed guide of what to focus on to improve your story.

So many steps…I know! This entire process can be confusing and even overwhelming, but don’t worry, I’m here to help. If you still aren’t quite sure where your manuscript stands, get in contact with me and we’ll figure it out together. I will never let you pay for a service you don’t need.
